emecks, as a Catholic, I can understand why your friend wanted to fight you, Catholics are scared of the Bible. Told my suite mate yesterday I was going to bible study and he said, what's the point of that? This guy has loosely said he's thought of becoming a priest before.
Unfortunately, this isn't the Church's fault. I think it's just the effect of egotism on society, which is a much more difficult thing to cure. I mean, I don't need to read the bible to be a catholic or a christian, I can make up all my doctrines on my own and then defend them with loosely remembered things from CCD (catholic confirmation education for kids). Sure my stuff will make no sense and if I challenged anybody who even browsed the bible for more than 10 minutes I'd be shown wrong, but who cares. I don't need no Bible to tell me how to be a Christian.
