for what it's worth.
the linking of a physical product to an electronic product (mp3 sold online through iTunes as opposed to cd's or cassettes transported around the world to be sold through stores etc) has the potential to be more 'eco-effective'.
But the issues of toxicity, embodied energy, poor reverse logistics, resource heritage etc still stand and need to be improved.
Because of the product life-cycle issues (battery replaceability) and particularly strong customer loyalties to the brand, Apple could be really innovative and start producing iPods as a service system as opposed to end-use product. Close the loops and all that.......................
