They're all right about Hillcrest. I work about 4 blocks away. Check out Extraordinary Desserts for sure. We get cakes from them all the time for crap at the office. They are nuts and damn good.
I would drive up to La Jolla see, the cove and the seals, do the touristy stuff, and the drive up the PCH to Solana Beach/Cardiff and eat at Pipes Cafe. Its off of Chesterfield.Pizza Port is also good for beer and pizza.
The beauty of San Diego is that its down tempo on the outside, you gotta look around, but there's enough stuff to do.
Oh yeah btw, we worked late one night and were told to "order whatever we want" for dinner and charge it to the company... We got Sushi Ito. The bill was in the triple didgets. Now when we work late its "order whatever, as long as its NOT Sushi Ito!"
