sorry my head isnae wurken too weel today.
If the linkage is set to "export for ActionScript" and "export in firstframe" then these exported items get loaded BEFORE the timeline can start playing thus making a dog's dinner of your preloading.
By manually dropping an instance on a frame AFTER your preloader you essentially preload that library item because it is part of the movie and has an instance on the timeline, but you have control over WHEN it gets preloaded...
