deanstag - as someone who's a) high up at (mt) and b) has everything I've got on my own (as), I thought I should jump in and set the record straight here on a few points.
1) It is very easy to install ImageMagic, though you do need root access to your machine. Since having root is a big responsibility (as you can then hurt things) we always try to qualify people before just handing that out.
2) Even though it's easy for us to install, we do of course try to maintain our policies. If we do an installation, and then you want an upgrade for what is essentially a custom configuration, are we on the hook for that as well? In order to maintain a level of high quality support for our customer base, we do need to make it clear what we are and aren't responsible for so that people don't have the wrong expectation values.
3) Yes, there are cheaper VPS solutions that you can buy. They are cheaper for a reason. We use the best hardware that money can buy. All of our machines are HP ProLiant servers, with screaming fast SCSI drives in RAID for redundancy. All of this does cost a little more, but if you go with a whitebox server solution, and you blow a drive then you'll be wishing you'd spent the extra few dollars.
