By the way "Van Halen I" was as equally, if not far more, punk and radical than anything the Sex Pistols or the Clash were basically doing at the same time - sonically speaking. They were like Black Flag with big giant phalluses, and um wearing day glo colors and stuff...it really was a big "fuck you" to the rock sound conventions at the time. Weird how it sounds just like everything else these days, but these kids wrote the playbook..
