I overheard someone today relating an embarassing tale of vulnerability. They were distressed that they had let their guard down for a moment and revealed what lies behind the mask-exposed themself, as it were, and were met with awkward silence. It seemed to them that the act of revelation was not the most painful part of the experience but rather it was in that silence, that awkward silence which followed.
Awkward silence. Awkward. Look at the word. Take a pen and pad and write it down. No matter how you write it, spell it, pict-o-gram it. It never looks quite right. Face it, awkward is an awkward word. It looks awkward, it sounds awkward, it is awkward. When coupled with silence, it can shrivel the mightiest man, slay the confident, and banish to the shadows the meek and miserable. Awkward silence is reserved as a gift you don't wish to receive.
