it downloads the information off amazon.com. it isn't set up for bar codes in canada yet so i had to enter the title of the book/movie/cd/game and it would search amazon and then download the info from there. if you bought something from the states though the scanning thing would work (i was able to scan a couple things, it was so cool!). i am pretty sure they are developing it to work with other countries, so hopefully that will happen soon
