if you give them an inch, they take a mile.
if you give them a centimeter, they take a kilometer.
doesnt mean as much to me.

true but consider this:
a kilometre is exactly 100 000 centimetres
a mile is approximately 63360 inches
proportionaly you're losing more by giving them a centimetre.
