I quibble with the concept that "mystery meat navigation" is necessarily a bad thing-- does it really matter if you know the client is someone named "Lup" before you click on the number? Is there any more reason to click on "Lup" than "Dap" if you're just looking to see various samples of a designer's work you know nothing about? It's not like you're ordering auto parts. Also, I'd only strip it down if that's what you feel is right for you in the long run. That advice migh be coming from someone who would have told you to add decorative touches six months ago. I personally might strip away some of the ornament, but your site should reflect your own sensibility.
