if its one color gradually fading to the paper.. the a halftone effect in the way to go.
but if you want to make the gradient 2 or more colors, the term is called a split fountain.
a technique used a lot in the 60's
i tried it a couple times in college and it a real bitch. but if you like screen printing, you need to try it at least once
