It's the assault of the Q's..
I bought the cheapest Canon scanner I could find when I was looking for one, upwards of three or four years ago. It still works great for me. They've phased the actual model out, but replaced it with one that's just as good. I bought one of the really, really thin ones. It can do up to 1200 dpi (I believe, though I just use it for web scanning), with a scanning area of up to 8.5 x 11., and was about $120.
Most of their scanners are very moderately priced, and work extremely well.
