I think it's important to know what's going down as to what relates directly to your work, but let's face it, a lot of people use this kind of name dropping to make themselves seem more knowledgeable, they are basically shouting ME ME ME. These people also try and use this 'knowledge' to undermine others, office politics bullshit more often than not.
