First off, designers don't have a right to be saying anything about what developers do or don't do with their code. I see so many designers on here complain about site rips its ridiculous. To say that code can't be expressive, creative and original is like saying a painting is art but a comic strip isn't.
(cue Bill Watterson)
With that said...
Every time I've e-mailed a developer with a question specific to their code, they've graciously responded with all the help I've needed. And when I've been asked questions, I do the same...hell, I spend some of my free time on Kirupa doing just that.
I believe in open sourcing and helping people out, and I actually own a copy of SWF Decompiler...I think its great that I can draw inspiration from a place and actually learn from the source without pestering the author. But the key is that you should be an experienced developer using that source as inspiration, not as a way to thief code.
Sorry for rambling on.
