    for just speaking, you can get away with a Sure SM58 or similar (around 100 bucks). you might want to consider renting if it's just one project. higher quality condensers will cost you more. much more.

    mics also require an extra stage of amplification to reach line level, so you'll need a preamp too. most audio interfaces have mic pre's built in (edirol makes a decent budget unit). higher quality condensers also need 48 volt phantom power.

    for recording, you want an acoustically "dead" room, free of reflections, so just hang some heavy blankets to form a "booth" of sorts, carpets on the floor, etc.. and use a mic stand so you don't get mic handling noise.
