    if you have a version of Max that uses radiosity (5 or higher), you can turn on radiosity, and give the material and illuminance value.

    If you have Vray for renderer which i have, vray free is free, you can give, it will calculate a material with 100% self illumination as a light source.

    Otherwise you can fake it by sticking an omni light near the object of the same color, and turn off cast and receive shadows on the object.
