when you type a quotation mark, sometimes it looks like a straight dagger, and sometimes it looks like a proper inverted comma (with a head and a tail, like a little curled up spermatazoa).

dagger quotes (or straight quotes) are generally frowned upon and are to be avoided.

curly quotes (or smart quotes) are the industry preference. there are hot keys that allow you to force your quotation marks to appear as smart quotes. as far as i know, these hot keys work in quark, photoshop and most html editors.

i've been working in an html editor today (oh the horror!) and my quotes were all appearing as daggers. normally i don't have to worry about it because photoshop and quark generally default to curly quotes, but dreamweaver isn't nearly so clever. i knew there were hot keys, but had forgotten what they were. hence, i came to good ol' nt for some guidance.

    clearer?
