jennydean is also right. santa ana does have some very nice areas in fact. many cities in orange county are much cheaper in LA. and if you plan on working in LA, you will be one of thousands that make that commute everyday. it's pretty normal.
try costa mesa, fountain valley, huntington beach, Los Feilz, and Cypress while your at it. some of those cities are just south of long beach. very arrordable and pretty nice.
