Try to drive around, that's the best luck I had (I am so glad to have moved out of there). WSR is really all there is, but you'll show up for an apartment and there will be 30 other people there, all looking to move in.
I found numerous apartments around sm that only had signs out front and no listing on WSR. The ones I found were around Barrington and Pico, mostly south of there.
