You might also check out Santa Ana...they have a pretty good growing artists village. They are about finished with some nice apartments/lofts on Main street, right next to DGWB ad agency. They bought the old City Hall building. A couple good cafes and restaurants withing walking distance, freeway close, and about 20 minutes by car to the beach.
