westside rentals pretty much has a monopoly on all the apt. listings in LA. so youre pretty safe just looking in there. generally speaking, the further east you go from the coast, the less you'll pay for rent. you can find some nice places in hollywood, silverlake, echo park for not too much money. i'd steer clear of the san fernando valley if at all possible. its miserabley hot in the summer and theres almost nothing to do out there even though the rent is super cheap. ive got a place in south pasadena which is kinda out of the way but its nice and pleasant. good luck!
