QuickTime won't recognize a DVD directly, meaning the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder located in the disc. You'll have to 'demux' the material (break it into separate audio and video files) before you can open in and view it within QuickTime.
With the MPEG2 'plug-in', QuickTime can read .m2v video files.
