anyways, I am watching this thread, 'cause that's an interesting question to me, yo.
I do bgs with Illustrator and PShop. Then mess a lot in PShop with layer's blending options and colors and everything. I tried that function in PShop, but didn't really get anything really helpfull. Maybe I'm dumb. An intersting stuff was that 70° / 114° thing, but I can't remember exactly right now.
