It's an obvious attempt to compete with the outlandish characters of Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, etc that are all the rage. That 'Back in Action' flick that came out recently bombed miserably and they must have reassessed their strategy. It's not original, but the characters look great in my opinion.
And to all those that say just make new characters, maybe so, but no one got angry when they made Tiny toons, or Muppet babies, or Flintstones kids, or any of the other bazillion revamps of existing franchises. At least these aren't diaper wearing midget versions of the originals. They's badass!
