we worked our way up the first time, there is pretty much two ways to go (due to the government owning all the tour operators) you go down from north to south or vice versa. Alternative is to buy a bike and then sell it at the end of your trip. It used to be impossible to hire cars due to the government laws etc.
As for places to go, Saigon is awesome... crazy and exactly like you would imagine based on all those shitty war movies.
It was my first experience of Asia and Travelling and it's a great place to start.
Na Trang was nice and chilled, good beaches good people, very agressive lady boys.
We went up to this private peninsular for three days where we slept in pagodas, hiked up a waterfall and through a jungle and swam in phosperous algae at night. All this with a tour guide who used to smuggle ganga into the us from canada in a canoe....
Da Lat was great in a different way, it's where the vietnamese go to cool off and have a holiday. Very touristy but touristy for them not aimed at us. We ended up clubbing with some local kids (they would keep the bars open for as long as we were drinking so the locals loved us) stayed in an amazing place there too...
Trying to think of some more things but the memory is a bit cloudy for the names apart from the typical places like the tunnels, the mekong delta the American War museum.
I'll go through my diary at home tonight and dig out some more stuff...
