also, my drummer is on this brilliant scheme where you pay very minimal rent to live in strange buildings like disused factories (hers is a massive listed mansion that used to be a care home - she has an entire wing to herself for fa £)
basically it's cheaper for them to get minimal rent out of people to act as "property guardians" than it is to pay for security. I don't know how you get on their list but here's the site:
