I think the music of your early teens will always be special to you as it evokes memories and feelings you had at that time of your life.
As for hating our kids music. Well, the subject matter and attitude are harder to relate too because their culture is slightly different to ours was.
I think if you're inteested in music you can hear lots of good stuff, mainstream or otherwise.
