Well, I'm from the school of thought that the only difference between an "artist" and a "designer" is a client.
Designers predominantly produce work for a client.
While artists usually produce work for themselves.
Of course this works both ways, but the bottom line is that "artists" do more work for themselves, and then sell it.
But hey, we used be called "graphic artists"...
