if you wanna keep your car, then live in brooklyn. car is nice to have, but you really don't need it unless you have a house in hamptons and going there every weekend.
rent in manhattan is about 1500-2000 for a studio, and sometimes, if you get lucky, like my friend, you can have a studio with a private roof deck for 1300 in west village. that's the kind of deals you have to keep your eyes on.
