The greatest Gigs won by big companies mostly come from contests that involve huge projects, at least in my country that is. For the people who don't want to take any risks working on the field they like, its better to retire or change industry.

--------------------that's true. but those big-huge contests usually pay some $$$ even if you're not teh winner.
last invitational contest, in which the studio i work at was invited to, had a prize of $14.000. six design studios were invited. every studio received $1000 for the time taken.that's how those contests usually work.
