what bothers me here is the contradicting terms and ambitions of this contest: you first have to prove you are worthy to enter this competition. This - in my view - touches on other people's issues here.
What I mean is that
- Yes; contests are a way for beginning and portfolio-building designers.
- No; you cannot use an excuse that "you want an assurance of quality" by pre-determining the participants of a competition. If you do, it is a pitch, not a competition. If it is a pitch, you invite designers who then know and accept it is a pitch project. Keep in mind that certain pitches are paid for.Big hand for the statement that we are professionals, experts. And not some hobbiests.
I'm not against competitions, if that is what it actually is. Contests are not graphic design only, they are done throughout industries.
Here however, what we have is some sort of open request to do a pitch. With the client doing a selection based on the expertise of the ones expressing their will to enter the pitch by submitting a portfolio.
Where it becomes confusing is when you start mentioning it is a community building event. It is not: call it for what it is: a pitch. For a job. For money. For possible follow up jobs.
A pitch, I say ;-)
