Dunno about following the flock. It really isn't that simple. I would rather compare the design work to making scientific studies. You have to acknowledge the work done before you and then create some new application of the previous academic research. Only then you can claim your own work to be valuable. Even if you try to mimic some idea/look you'll still have to adapt it to the purpose of the piece. If you don't, it really isn't design by definition, now is it?
