maybe some people don't need it that badly. I think there is a case for having this kind of production, and I don't think it necessarily dilutes any other work done by designers.
Also from a standpoint of your work, if you can educate a potential client on the desireability/value/advantage of having a logo/identity created by yourself then you should probably be fine.
I also think that sometimes people can come up with better designs for themselves rather than having a designer do it. Obviously I'd never tell a client that...
