i used to do shotokan. I'd say kung-fu is really good to learn for self-defence, but it does take a long time to master. I'd reccomend kick boxing as somethign that'll work on your overall strength and ability to defend yourself - quickly. - but you will get your arse kicked by someone who knows some slick martial arts with some hold and stuff.
Also Tae Kwondo, works similarly to Kick Boxing in some respects
