I lived in Egypt for 6 months. I can count and say all the basics and in fact Arabic can be beautifully spoken. Politics aside it can be a beautiful culture and that's what it's all about in the end isn't it? Your right though it is read and written from left to right same as Hebrew and most ancient langauges.
