    My call to Charlotte turned up nothing.

    I know you said you have been looking around NoDa and Dilworth with are indeed the more artistic and interesting parts of town. But...

    If you are wanting cheap, may I recommend looking a little more west. My sister lives in an apartment complex just off Brookshire and Mt. Holly/Huntersville road. Its not all that cool, mostly families, but it is safe and about a 8-10 minute drive from Center City.

    Also check some of the housing near UNCC. Gotta be cheap for the kids.
