I could offer up some wisdom, but it would be relevant to Canadian law, not US. :\

    The basics are as follows:
    - leah is 100% right in that wear and tear is usually acceptible. The landlord can only keep your money if damage is intentional and/or through negligence.
    - It is up to you to protect yourself. You have to keep a signed and dated record of the state of your place the day you moved in to compare to when you move out. It is up to the landlord to catch you trying to cheat. ;)
    - They can only keep their costs, so they shouldn't need *all* of it.

The place I was in last was governed by pure assholes and it took a lot of fighting and research to get my money back. If there is a US equivelant of the Residential Tenancy Board then seek them out. They will offer mediation for a nominal fee.

    Good luck!
