as someone who has looked into going there for relief work, there is actually not that big of a need for volunteers. red cross is turning people away, they have enough physical bodies helping out right now.
what they do need is cash. and although it looks awkward, those tourists are helping out. some are saying that the tourists have the attitude that 'nothing is going to ruin my vacation.' i'm sure they easily could have rescheduled their vacations, but the fact that they went there despite the dour atmosphere, to me, proves that they are trying to help the tourist economy get back in gear. surely being there is spoiling their vacation, and it would be more selfish of them to just take it elsewhere.
