It matters in that some companies are easier to deal with than others. I've heard some horror stories about registrars basically hijacking or holding a domain hostage when the time comes for a user to transfer or cancel their ownership. I used http://www.easyhosting.ca for mine, but http://www.domainpeople.ca seems pretty on the ball as well. Only certain registrars can register .ca domains as well, so you may find some well respected companies who can't help you out anyway.
Long story short, do your research before settling.
Or, as warheroes said, just dump in on the web host.
