That's funny. i almost did that for my family and friends this year. Only I was going to but pillows and then print on them, not actually make them.
I always do homemade gifts, in addition to other stuff. They end up being the most exciting ones.
This year I gave out postcards tat I had designed and got printed. they were a hit.
