If the stars eventually burn out the universe will become a cold, dark place. IE, the Sun. Not sure what the Earth will smell like. More than likely the same. That's assuming we don't kill each other off first.
The other possibility is that at some point the universe will quit expanding and then collapse in on itself. If it collapses in on itself, there will be a "Big Crunch," which would pretty much be the end as far as you and I are concerned! Not sure what the Earth will smell like.
More than likely the end of the world, if we are here for that type of thing (assuming when we think the end of the world is happening it really is) imo will smell sulfuric. Like rotten eggs. Sulfuric acid and gases can mess you up bigtime.
