I've learned that using not only a pen and paper helps in terms of writing and remembering songs, but also a recorder of some type, so that when your brain picks up a melody of some type, you can at least hum it out and try and duplicate it at a later date. Been doing that for years. Always have a recorder near me or in my pocket. I've done it all over the world, inspiration comes in strange times. Also, I've noticed that if you listen to a constant hum of some type, like an AC Hum from a lamp, white noise, etc. your brain will start making melodies, if that makes sense.
