    The most useful design books are the ones with hardly any/ no pictures. Don't buy the glossy coffeetable books if you want to learn about design.

    For history 'A concise hisory of graphic design' by Richard Hollis is good.

    For design know-how try 'grid systems' by joseph muller-brockman.

    and 'Elements of typographic style' by Robert Bringhurst.

    Or how about 'The new typography' by Jan Tschichold

    Yes it's tempting to buy the pretty books, but you won't get much out of them.
