    It is true that ATI cards have tested better than the new GeForce cards. Read the article I posted above for facts/comparisons/tests/etc. It discusses all the cards and declares the ATI Radeon Pro the winner for overall best performance.
    These are CONSUMER cards, though, and shouldn't be mistaken for the upper end where, until very recently, the nVidia Quadro series (I have a Quadro 4 700gxl and a GeForce 64 mb) which is aimed at professionals (mostly for 3D and video work - you don't need these cards for web design or simple 3D). The problem with the upper end ATI Fire series has been their drivers. nVidia has always done a great job with drivers. This has changed recently, though, and ATI seems to be taking the lead.

    It is also true that NAME brands do make the difference. The drivers are a significant part of the equation and can increase/decrease performance significantly.
    Things to keep in mind.
