firefox, gentoo linux (kernel 2.6.9) and everything is fine. including flash.
firefox runs on my xp box at work as well...with little trouble.
reason 1, loose the integrated google toolbar.
check what extensions you have...try removing extensions 1 by 1 and see if that helps.
i know one of the tabbed browing extensions is buggy and can cause serious problems.
