That's a good question, I've seen it happen. Someone in my company designed a logo for a new product, then found something almost identical. The only reason they found it was because it happened to be another product for almost the same purpose. Weird.
There ought to be some kind of image database you could check against. I'm sure it's possible. The same way that OCR text recognition works... just look for similar patterns...
