What amazes me the most is his ability to absorb and anaylze so much information--and he always argues that anyone with the New York Times and some time on their hands can do the same.
He's probably the most hated intellectual in the country. Which in itself is something to be proud of. It proves he's ruffling the necessary feathers.
A lot of his criticism comes from right-wing Jews who condemn him as an anti-semite (or self-hating Jew rather). Their argument is generally based around the fact that Chomsky allowed a piece he had written on anti-censorship to be used as the introduction of a French book that denies the holocaust. Regardless of how wise this was of Chomsky to do, the fact is that the French government at the time forbid any book that denied the holocaust to be published and Chomsky believed that an open-discourse was a much better solution than censorship--even if the argument being made is absurd.
