when I was a kid I had these radio thingimajigs my uncle gave me that I used to be able to pick up aircraft comms and emergency service frequencies, it was pretty flakey old equipment with those bulbs inside and quite dusty, occasionally it would start to give off this putrid burning metallic/electrical smell - that is what the end of the world will smell like, possibly similar to your copier. But mixed with a hint of that crystalline honey smell that winos give off.
