I look up to Sagmeister because I think his vision is change and experimentation. Almost everything I've seen of his shows a dedication to the message, craft and concept. Not this bullshit trend following that 95% of do everyday. So much of the work our class of designers produce is out of style 9 months after its done...mean anything?
Of course we have to make a living but I think its our duty to push clients into trying something new, to see the world outside of their respective market. To think beyond the machine. Yeah its tough, it's damn near impossible. What it takes is presentation, experimentation and explanation, if they don't bite then give them what they want, pay the rent and move on. I've started making it a practice to include a comp that is different in every set that I do. I explain the process and the vision behind it and leave it up to them. But you will find those clients who are willing to take the trip. Believe me you will.
Too many of us are following style and not message.
