We all need to eat. I get that. But I feel as though it's not necessary to have this great commercial success that (I'm mentioning him again) Bruce Mau has in order to make a difference beyond the world of "graphic design".
I would much rather serve lattes at the corner shop here to pay the bills and work all night on something that could potentially change someone's views, or make them re-think something that affects the world, than (as iDp mentioned) doing cookie cutter "graphic" design.
Some designers need to start thinking with their fucking heads and not just their eyes.
